UN HABITO QUE  PUEDE CAMBIAR EL MUNDO:

ALTRUISMO

A HABIT THAT CAN CHANGE THE WORLD:

ALTRUISM

But what is altruism?
It is the quality of being able to care for others not in search of our own good but for the good of others. In other words, it means acting selflessly for the welfare of others.
But what do we need to be altruistic?
We need Empathy, which is the innate ability to feel what others feel, and also not only human beings but also animals, and with this I do not mean only chimpanzees but rats and other species. And here I bring up an anecdote that my father told me, that as a good observer of nature I get it. My father, by the way, is a Doctor in Physics, is a lover of animals and nature and has a land where he has chickens, turkeys, ducks, cats and dogs (most adopted).
The other day when I told him that I was very interested in writing this article told me that he had observed how the leg laid eggs and the turkey also and that even being of different species one took turns with the other to take care of the eggs of both. And I thought that such a spectacular thing, we are talking about ducks and turkeys, not about human beings alone, surely this of empathy, cooperation and altruism is something that we bring innate from many years of evolution.
-We cooperate by indirect reciprocity, that is to say "I help you, while the others observe", for which the fact of helping gives you a good reputation in the community
But the important thing about empathy is not only to understand the needs of the other but to know how to respond to them, and from this we can say that empathy leads to cooperation. and what motivates us to be cooperative?
- We cooperate by continuous reciprocity, that is, "if I help you, you will help me later"

-And finally we cooperate by spatial selection (cooperative people who come together, for example in the neighborhood); by group selection (everyone in a group cooperates, for example, in a sports competition) and by family selection (we are more likely to help a family member)

But why are there people who are not cooperative and altruistic? and I mean to be this way with all the people.
It has been shown in psychology studies that we are born with the ability to distinguish between good and evil (rudimentary moral capacity). And this is very easy to verify in everyday life, especially for those of us who have children, they have not realized that our children comfort us when we are afflicted?
The studies that have been done with images have shown that to SEE to suffer to the other is ALMOST the SAME for the brain, that is to say "the pain of one is the pain of another", but not of any other.
Then it seems that the behavior of dividing between US and THEM would lead to the rejection of those OTHERS.
These studies have shown that if our partner or someone with whom we share the same tastes (for example, a football team, etc) our brain suffers ALMOST exactly as if we were the ones who experienced pain.
TO MEDITATE. It has been observed that 30 minutes a day of meditation to complete a total of 7 hours is enough to change the brain.
What has been seen is that this is something that lasts a lifetime. There are experiments that show how empathy disappears and a sense of SADIC PLEASURE (observed through brain images) appears when the person suffers, (for example from the rival team to their soccer team).
And what can we do then to cultivate altruism?
For example, it has been shown that in school children who practiced meditation for 12 weeks, conflicts in the school were reduced.
"the one that allows us to visualize the one who suffers, to wrap him in a warm mantle and wish him well-being" is to say I UNDERSTAND YOU AND I CAN HELP YOU.

But too much Empathy, can also lead to emotional wear. How do we avoid this? Through a certain type of meditation that allows the person to connect with the suffering of others without activating the network of anguish or fear, which protects them from the risks of stress and suffering. "If you suffer more and more, you can not help anyone, you are diminished by this empathic anguish". And what kind of meditation would then be the most advisable?
And it is at this moment that I thought of myself as a health worker and a psychiatrist in the Burnout.

Burnout Syndrome (also called "Burnout" or "Burned Worker Syndrome") involves the evolution of work stress towards a state of chronic stress.
The Burnout Syndrome (from the English "burn-out": to be consumed or to be exhausted) is characterized by a progressive physical and mental exhaustion, a lack of absolute motivation for the tasks carried out, and especially, by important changes of behavior in those who suffer it . This attitude change, usually related to "bad manners" towards others or unpleasant treatment, is usually one of the key characteristics to identify a Burnout case.
This syndrome tends to occur more frequently in those jobs related to the care of third parties, such as teachers, health personnel or people working in customer service, and it can be a reason for sick leave, since there comes a time when the employee he is physically and mentally incapacitated to carry out his work.
Other studies are observing what happens if some people are given a certain amount of money and they are told that they should buy something for another money and others are told to buy something for themselves. What is observed is that the people who bought something for themselves did not feel happy, they felt the same as before; On the other hand, people who bought something for someone else were
In a study conducted in E.U. 60% of health workers suffer or have suffered from this syndrome. And in another study that is currently underway, several people with different jobs are trained in meditation, to meditate 30 minutes a day and the findings so far are positive. A neonatal ICU nurse comments: "meditating has helped me to put myself in the place of my other colleagues, be more kind and less aggressive".
It has also been seen that if a first person was kind to a second person, this in turn will be kind to the third person and so on, even without the third person knowing the first person. This is what researchers call "chain of kindness." This is as easy as throwing a stone in the water and making waves.
"We allow others to suffer as if nothing" so I invite you to start practicing meditation to be more cooperative with everyone and in this way be more altruistic as this will help others and us to be happier. "JT
